Short answer: Agentic Storefronts is how Shopify makes your products available in AI channels such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. It is on by default for eligible stores. Check three things: the settings under Sales channels > Agentic; whether titles, descriptions, images, variants and barcodes (GTIN, UPC) are complete and accurate; and whether your shipping, return and refund policies are filled in. It covers product listings. It does not replace pages on your site that answer shoppers' questions.
What it is: Shopify feeds your catalog to AI shopping
In Shopify's words, agentic storefronts let customers discover and buy your products in AI channels. Shopify's own example: a shopper asks for navy running shorts, and the assistant shows a selection that fits.
Your product data reaches those channels two ways:
- Shopify Catalog: a structured index Shopify builds from eligible products across stores. By default it carries title, description, options, images, price and availability, and Shopify keeps it updated. ChatGPT and Copilot use it, and Shopify's Meta page says Catalog powers discovery there too.
- The Google & YouTube channel or Google Merchant Center: this is the route for Google AI Mode and Gemini. Shopify says product discovery there is powered by Merchant Center.
| Channel | Product data | Where the shopper pays |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Shopify Catalog | Referral only: the shopper checks out on your own store checkout, inside ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab. |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Merchant Center | Direct checkout in the chat. Requires a US-based store selling to US customers with a Merchant Center account; shown only to US shoppers. |
| Microsoft Copilot | Shopify Catalog | Direct checkout, shown only to US shoppers. |
| Meta | Shopify Catalog (the Catalog overview page names the Facebook and Instagram channel) | Direct checkout, shown to shoppers in the US, Canada and Mexico. |
Shopify says there are no extra fees for these channels beyond your usual payment processing fees (see the ChatGPT, Google, Copilot and Meta pages). Orders from AI channels appear in your admin with the channel or referrer attached.
It is on by default: who counts as "eligible"
Shopify's wording is "active by default for eligible stores". The default setting is called Allow Shopify to manage for me. With it on, every AI channel can reach your products through Shopify Catalog, direct checkout is on where a channel supports it, and you are enrolled in new AI channels as they launch.
Eligibility mostly follows the Shopify Catalog requirements:
- Your store is on the Starter plan or higher and is not password protected.
- Each product has a title, at least one image and a price above zero. Free products are left out (Shopify's documentation).
- Products are published to the online store (or Hydrogen or Headless) with an identifiable product URL.
- Products are not Unlisted or hidden from search engines, and contain no sensitive content such as mature content.
- Your account is in good standing: verified email, two-step authentication, a track record of real sales, prompt fulfillment, a low chargeback rate, Shopify invoices paid on time.
Also: B2B-only products are excluded when Shopify can identify them, and products on OpenAI's prohibited list don't appear in ChatGPT results.
Not officially documented: apart from the direct checkout regions above, Shopify's help pages do not say which countries' stores can be discovered in ChatGPT or Copilot. We found no official statement. Go by what the Agentic page in your own admin shows.
What to check in your admin: Sales channels > Agentic
- Allow Shopify to manage for me: turn it off to control Shopify Catalog access, Auto enroll new storefronts, and each channel's catalog access and direct checkout. An Other channels switch covers smaller and newer AI shopping agents.
- What turning off catalog access does: Shopify says it can take up to 7 days before your data stops being shared (Shopify's documentation), direct checkout turns off with it, and your products can still be found through web crawling and indexing. You cannot opt out of Shopify Catalog itself, and the Shop app is managed separately.
- Hiding one product from every AI channel: set it to Unlisted or use the
seo.hiddenmetafield. It will also disappear from Google search. - Reports: sales, orders, online store sessions and conversion for each AI channel.
- Search preview: type a query and see whether your products make the top results in Shopify Catalog, with a Listing quality bar and Listing insights for each product.
Example: a parts seller on the Shopify Community asked "Why can't we opt out of Agentic Storefronts?", worried AI would match customers with the wrong part. Per Shopify's help pages, you can switch off catalog access per channel and mark products Unlisted, but you can't leave Shopify Catalog itself, and products may still be found on the open web.
Product data: the fields Shopify names
Shopify's page on optimizing products for AI platforms lists the fields AI platforms and shopping sites consider. The Listing insights in search preview add specific signals. Together:
| Field | What Shopify says | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Title | Clear, accurate, detailed. No format rules given. | Can a stranger tell what the product is? |
| Description | Description completeness is measured by word count. Legal disclosures belong in the first 6,000 characters (Shopify's documentation). | Specs, uses and fit are written out; warnings sit near the top. |
| Images | At least one required (Shopify's documentation); Image coverage counts images. | Products with a single photo. |
| Variants and options | Counts variants, options and in-stock availability, and checks for option names with acronyms or numbers agents find hard to understand. | Readable option names (illustration: "Black", not "BLK-02"). |
| Barcode | ISBN, UPC, GTIN and similar are listed as fields considered. Not stated as required. | Fill them in where your products have one. |
| Type, vendor, collections, tags | Listed as fields considered. | Blank fields. |
| Reviews | Only reviews verified by trusted sources count. Which sources qualify is not documented. | Your review app displays correctly. |
| Store policies | Shop policy completeness checks for shipping, returns, refund and other policies. AI agents can quote your stored return policy when asked. | Empty entries under Settings > Policies. |
Also from Shopify's pages: if titles, descriptions or categories live in metafields, metaobjects or tag prefixes, use Shopify Catalog Mapping to point the catalog at the right source. The Shopify Knowledge Base app lets you review the FAQs AI platforms use to answer questions about your store. If you use the Google & YouTube channel, turn on Automatically sync products and Automatically sync shipping information so Merchant Center matches your store. Google AI Mode direct checkout also requires completed Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy (Shopify's documentation).
What it doesn't cover: answer pages on your own site
Shopify is explicit that Shopify Catalog is the main way AI channels get product data, but AI crawlers may also visit your store on the open web. The two paths are independent. Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt affects only open-web discovery and doesn't stop the catalog feed; switching off catalog access doesn't stop crawling. Shopify's advice covers both: complete product information, and standard SEO practice.
Shopify also states that being in Shopify Catalog does not guarantee a product appears in a specific AI answer, ranks in a specific position, or shows in every channel. Each channel controls the final ranking and wording.
Our reading, not Shopify's words: the catalog carries listings, meaning title, price, stock and images. When a shopper asks "what's the best power station for a 12V fridge on a weekend trip under $500?", the assistant often looks for a page that explains how to choose. That part still depends on your site being crawled and indexed. So check the basics too: can AI crawlers reach your store?
A ten-minute checklist
- Sales channels > Agentic: is Allow Shopify to manage for me on, and is each channel set the way you want?
- Run three real shopper queries in search preview. Do your products show up? Which Listing quality signals are low?
- Pick your ten best sellers and review title, description, image count, barcode and option names.
- Settings > Policies: terms of service, privacy, return and refund, and shipping policies all filled in?
- If you sell wholesale: are B2B-only products in Shopify B2B catalogs, or hidden by hand?
- Open
yourstore.com/robots.txtand confirm it doesn't block OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot or Bingbot. Or check everything at once:

Common questions
If I switch off ChatGPT's catalog access, will my products disappear from ChatGPT?
Not necessarily. Shopify says products may still be found through web crawling and indexing. To hide a product completely, set it to Unlisted, which also removes it from Google search.
Do these AI channels charge a commission?
Shopify's pages for ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Copilot and Meta all say there are no extra fees, only your standard payment processing fees.
My store isn't in the US. Does this matter for me?
Direct checkout has regional limits: Google needs a US store selling to US customers, Copilot shows it to US shoppers, and Meta to shoppers in the US, Canada and Mexico. ChatGPT sends shoppers to your own checkout. Which countries' stores can be discovered is not spelled out in Shopify's help pages, so check your admin.
